Bryan Saul adds, "I’m not sure if it was his first day or not but he was new. He originally was going to ride on the rear locomotive but the old head brakeman, I think it was Ingersol, convinced him to ride with him on the third. Good thing cause the rear locomotive turned over and many of those 36 cars buried it in the fire. I also was pretty new, had about a year, and was the first crew on the scene. We pulled the rear cars out of the derailment sight and took them to Matanuska and put them up the branch. Then on rest I was called in as the brakeman on the north end work train. All I can say it was pretty cool and exciting as a 19 year old."
