Tim Coahran's Tender Work Photos, August 20, 2012

View from the top. Note lighting in the locomotive firebox. Chipping the tender top to remove hardened "Bunker C."

This stuff would make good pavement! Water tank door welded shut. Note weld completely filling the right hinge.

Hinge before grinding into weld. This will require some precise grinding to avoid causing damage. Drat! I cut a little too deep into center piece. Note mass of hardened "C" in background.
image image
Got it free! Note remnants of other welds along left side of opening. Thanks to Art Chase for the use of his yellow grinder! Newly freed hinge from underneath. The excess cut doesn't look too bad - can be easily filled by a good welder.

Hinge ready for deburring Fuel oil tank door. Screen & gasket are battered, but inside is fairly sludge-free.

Alemite in tender toolbox. All 3 sections of water tank door are now open behind tool box. Steps down into water tank. Recently freed hinge is just off the top of this photo.

All 3 water tank doors are now functional (click to see entire vertical photo) Parts marked for removal. These parts were added for use with an L/C crane after the tender had been retired from locomotive service.
