P30

Cab control car number 31 is a refurbished F40, Amtrak #244.
No prime movers, just cab control cars and 700KW Head End Power (HEP) generator.

"The ARR originally leased P31 (Amtrak 244) and P32 (Amtrak 236) from Amtrak along with a few other F40PHs while they started
to rebuild their GP units after receiving their first batch of SD70MACs. When the lease was up the ARR decided to buy the two units
from Amtrak and sent them to the shops to convert them to the cab cars they are today. These cab control cars are equipped with large
Head End Power (HEP) capabilities and have no motive power whatsoever."

P-31 is on the end of the winter Aurora. What is the purpose of this?  "Last year there was so many issues with snow slides that resulted in reverse shoves for long distances. So this year they put the 31 on in case there's an issue they can swap ends and go the other way.” It also provides back up HEP in case something goes wrong with the other two HEP units it can provide 800 KW. It’s also light piece of equipment that doesn’t burn any fuel idling unless the GEN sets running and doesn’t bounce around back there as much. 2/28/21
