2003 Holiday Pictures of the Week
In honor of the holiday season, I did something a little different for the POTW. I asked people to take and send a photo of the Alaska Railroad between Monday, December 22 and Saturday, December 27 midnight to use for the December 29 POTW. I said I would only accept one submission per person and it must include the photographer's name as well as the date and location the photo was taken.
In response to my request, I got some submissions that were not taken according to the rules stated above. So what do you fine folks think? Should I post them anyway? All in favor, signify by raising your right hand. Let's see...one...two...three...you in the white shirt please move back from your computer monitor so I can see if you have your hand raised...fifty...sixty...one hundred and twenty one...one hundred and twenty two. Okay, all opposed, signify by raising your left hand. Let's see...one...two...okay it looks like those in favor have carried the vote substantially. Democracy rules. | Art Chase | 12/20/03 | Numbers 4007, 4014 and 2809 at the west end yard lead of the Fairbanks yard. 25 below zero, the day before the shortest day of the year(20 Dec). The sun gets about 8 degree's above horizon. This shot was taken from the bed of my truck, on a tripod (shiver control apparatus), and the units are a half a mile away. The ice and snow are hanging heavy on the tree's and will so for another week. The units will soon back to the tank train and they well take it south later that after noon. Daylight will last for another hour. It's 1300 local. Photo taken with a Nikon 5700 at max zoom. And it was as cold as it looks. |

Thirty miles north the temperature had dropped to -22 F at Matanuska by 09:50. When passing through Wasilla at 10:15 temperature was up to -16 F and the frost still hung in the early morning air. | Bruce Gough | 12/23/03 | Spreader #9 from Portage to Seward (one at Hunter). Two to three feet of snow had our tracks buried and the spreader 9 did a good job of handling the white stuff. Pictures are not the greatest since was taken in other than ideal lighting with a digital camera. |
