Airborne Moose Sighting

by Jim Somerville

I passed a freight train taking the siding at Ekutna.  I figured the southbound passenger train must be near and indeed it was a couple miles further on.  I circled the meet just for fun.  Immediately after the lead engine passed the freight locomotives there was a considerable reduction in speed.  "Huh, what is the reason?" I thought.  Straightening out and flying south toward the end of the freight train and front of the passenger train it became immediately obvious.

A moose was trotting smartly down the track in front of the lead passenger locomotive.  I've heard of this for years but never got to witness.  The moose ran on a good 800 feet before exiting to the trees.
