Billboard Boxcar
Photographs courtesy of Mike Gerenday

During most of the 1980s a few box cars were repainted into a unique billboard scheme, one was placed on the other side of the track from the depot, where Park Spur is now. I've only seen photos of this particular car, so I can't say I've seen photos of more than one billboard car.

Located at the now Chugach Electric yard on the corner of Post Road and 1st Ave is 10312, a billboard boxcar used for storage. I went into one of the offices in the yard where the car is located and asked to take some photos. I got an odd look but permission was granted right away. So here are modern day photos of this unique car scheme. I'm pretty sure by the painted knuckles that when the car was painted it was retired from rail use.

Marklin made a fantasy set of these cars some time back, but if you had decals made and painted up a Walthers troop sleeper/boxcar you would have a winner. If anyone has photos that include more than one of these cars in a frame, please share them! 11/05/2020.
