My favorite stretch along the Alaska Railroad is Turnagain Arm. It is also arguably one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in America. Even though I've been there dozens of times every subsequent visit quickens my pulse and drops my jaw. The the snow-capped Chugach Mountains seem to rise out of the waters of Cook Inlet. Common visitors include Dall sheep, beluga whales and bald eagles. The low tide reveals mud flats whose quicksand like qualities have been known to trap an unwary visitor or two. 5/31/17 |
